Treats add up fast — a few large biscuits can equal a whole meal for a small dog. Enter your dog’s weight or daily calories and your treat’s calories to get a daily treat budget based on the veterinary 10% rule, and reduce meals to match on training days.
The 10% rule
Treats and extras should stay at or under 10% of daily calories. A 30 lb neutered adult dog needs roughly 700 kcal a day, so the treat budget is about 70 kcal — for example seven 10 kcal training treats or one medium biscuit. Small dogs hit the limit much faster: a 10 lb dog’s whole treat budget can be a single dental chew.
Common treats, roughly
| Treat | Typical calories |
|---|---|
| Small training treat | 3–10 kcal each |
| Medium biscuit | 40–80 kcal each |
| Large biscuit / bar | 100–150 kcal each |
| Dental chew (medium) | 50–100 kcal each |
| Tablespoon peanut butter | ~95 kcal |
Check your treat’s label — many now list kcal per piece. For weight management, use part of the daily kibble ration as training treats instead.
FAQ
Do dental chews and table scraps count?
Yes — everything beyond complete meals counts toward the 10%, including dental chews, scraps, lick mats and food-stuffed toys. Measure them like meals for a week to see the real total.
My dog is on a diet — can I still train with treats?
Yes, but stay inside the 10% of the (lower) weight-loss calorie target, use tiny low-calorie treats, and subtract the same amount from meals. Ask your vet if weight is not shifting.
