Water needs depend on weight, diet and weather. A cat eating wet food may barely drink, while the same cat on dry food needs several ounces from its bowl. Enter your pet’s details to see a normal range — and, if you’ve measured it, whether their current intake is within normal limits.
How much water is normal?
| Pet | Total daily water (food + bowl) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Dog | 50–65 ml per kg (about 0.8–1 fl oz per lb) | 30 lb dog: 23–30 fl oz (0.7–0.9 L) |
| Cat | 40–60 ml per kg (about 0.6–0.9 fl oz per lb) | 10 lb cat: 6–9 fl oz (180–270 ml) |
Wet food is about 75–80% water, so pets on wet diets drink much less from the bowl. Hot weather, exercise and nursing all increase needs.
When is it too much?
Veterinarians generally consider drinking more than 100 ml per kg per day (about 1.5 fl oz per lb) excessive for dogs and cats. Increased thirst can be a sign of kidney disease, diabetes, Cushing’s disease or hyperthyroidism, so it’s worth a vet visit — bring your measurements.
How to measure intake
Fill the bowl or fountain with a measured amount in the morning, measure what’s left 24 hours later, and repeat for three days. Subtract a little for evaporation, especially from fountains.
FAQ
Do water fountains help cats drink more?
Many cats prefer moving water, and studies suggest some drink more from fountains, though not all do. Keep a still bowl too, and clean the fountain and change the filter as the maker recommends.
My dog drinks a lot after exercise — is that a problem?
No. Judge intake over a full day in normal conditions, not after a hot walk.
